Phil Boggs, a 1997 graduate of Cedarville University with a bachelor's in finance and business management, credits his early career challenges, particularly his experience during the Enron bankruptcy, with shaping his path to success as Chief Financial Officer at Green Plains Inc.
Based in the largest city in Nebraska, Green Plains Inc. is North America’s fourth largest ethanol fuel producer, specializing in transforming renewable crops into sustainable ingredients aimed at reducing environmental impact and greenhouse gas emissions.
Boggs began his career as a financial analyst for a natural gas pipeline company that was a subsidiary of Enron. When Enron famously collapsed in 2001, Boggs witnessed how quickly workers can be thrust into an environment of uncertainty.
“Being exposed to such extreme business changes as a young professional opened my eyes to the idea that nothing in life is guaranteed,” said Boggs. “This experience helped me become more adaptable, to think on my feet and work smarter to excel in my career.”
After witnessing 25,000 workers lose their jobs after Enron’s downfall, Boggs decided it was in his best interest to pursue another career path with another company. In 2009, he joined Green Plains Inc. as director of treasury. Over the years, his expertise in financial strategy, business communication and investor relations helped him rise through the company’s ranks.
On November 1, 2024, Boggs was promoted to chief financial officer, where he now leads more than 60 employees in overseeing finance, accounting and investor relations. Under his leadership, Green Plains has continued to expand its reach in the renewable energy sector, solidifying its position as a leading player in North America's ethanol production.
“The key to success in business is to embrace challenges, take risks and adapt to change,” said Boggs. “I wasn’t looking for a role in investor relations when I first started, but when the opportunity came along, I embraced it, and it turned out to be a pivotal moment in my career. I’ve learned that success often lies just beyond the fear of stepping outside your comfort zone.”
Boggs attributes much of his professional growth to his experiences at Cedarville University, where he developed a solid foundation in business principles. His time in Alpha Chi, a men’s student organization, honed his leadership skills and commitment to service and community.
“Cedarville’s business program equipped me with the essential skills I use today as a chief financial officer,” said Boggs. “It also helped me integrate my faith into all aspects of my life, which has been a guiding principle in my professional journey.”
From navigating the early challenges of Enron to helping lead Green Plains to new heights, Boggs' career reflects his ability to turn adversity into opportunity, demonstrating the power of resilience and strategic thinking in the business world.
